You don't need to be a programmer to make a simple AI helper. Several popular AI tools now let you create your own "assistant" by writing instructions in ordinary English. Think of it as giving a very fast helper a written job description.
What a simple bot can do
- A recipe helper that suggests meals from what's in your fridge.
- A letter helper that drafts polite letters to the council or a company in your style.
- A club helper that answers common questions about your walking group or allotment society.
- A small business helper that drafts replies to common customer questions for you to check.
Step by step (the general idea)
Names and buttons change, so check the help pages of whichever tool you use. ChatGPT calls these "GPTs", Google Gemini calls them "Gems", and Microsoft Copilot has similar options.
Decide one job.
Keep it small: "help me plan weekly meals" is better than "help with everything".
Write the instructions.
For example: "You are a friendly meal planner. Ask me what's in the fridge, suggest three simple meals, and keep shopping lists short. Use British measurements."
Add any reference notes
(optional), such as your club's FAQ. Never upload anything private.
Test it.
Ask it ten realistic questions. Note where it goes wrong and tighten the instructions.
Keep it private
until you're happy, and only share with people you choose.
Safety rules for bot builders
- Never put personal, medical or financial details into the instructions or files.
- Always check what it writes before you send or publish it. AI can be confidently wrong.
- If customers will use it, tell them it's an AI and give a way to reach a real person.
- Business users: think about UK GDPR before using customer data. See AI at work and UK GDPR.
